Amazing location

The Thatch Guest House offers accommodation with the accent on comfort. Bordering an acclaimed bird sanctuary and overlooking the Indian Ocean, this establishment provides luxury and tranquillity to the discerning traveller.

Situated close to local amenities and an easy 10 minutes from the East London city centre and 20 minutes from the airport, The Thatch is well placed to provide for all needs.

The Indian Ocean coastline is the main feature – and attraction – of the Eastern area. The warm sea is good for swimming and fishing.  There are small resort developments at virtually all river mouths in the eastern part of the region.

East London, South Africa’s only river port, is set on both the broad Buffalo River and Nahoon River and has the Gonubie River flowing around it.  It is known as the gateway to the region’s tourist corridors:  the Sunshine Coast and the Wild Coast.

The Sunshine Coast is to the south and runs for more than 200 km to Port Elizabeth.  The Wild Coast is to the north. Rugged and unspoilt, the coastline is indigenous coastal forest.

Naturally cool in summer, and with heaters in all of the rooms to keep the chill away in the winter, the eight well-appointed, spacious and luxurious bedrooms offer sea-views, en-suite bathrooms with both bath and shower, comfortable seating, tea and coffee making facilities, bar-fridge, telephones and individual televisions with M-Net and satellite availability.

East London Museum

At the north end of Oxford Street, the East London Museum, established in 1921, is one of the most fascinating natural history museums in the country. The star attraction here is the coelacanth, a fish with limb-like fins that was believed to have become extinct more than 80 million years ago until it was caught in the Chalumna River, near East London, in 1938.

Snake Park

The Venom Pit Snake Park

Even those with a snake phobia will find something to appreciate about these misunderstood animals at this small snake park. The park cares for a collection of more than a thousand reptiles from around the world and focuses on African snakes such as mambas, large adders, dwarf adders, African pythons, cobras, and file snakes, with a few exotic species thrown into the mix.
